BENEFITS OF CLEAN ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL LEGISLATION IN NIGERIA

CLEAN energy is an energy that has little or no pollutants-emissions during the creation, storage process, and usage. It has decreased carbon emissions than fossil fuel. This makes it less harmful to the environment.

Examples of clean energy  are solar (sunlight), wind turbines (wind), hydroelectric energy ( water). While examples of fossil energy are the petroleum oil, coal, natural gas.

It is worthy  to note that while most clean energy  sources are renewable, not necessarily always. However, we can equate clean energy to clean air, but it's not totally harm-free to the environment unlike green energy.

Advocating for environmental safety involves implementing urban and rural ecological policies that restore and enhance our cities and rural areas while aligning with the principles of nature. This approach respects the cultural integrity of all communities and ensures equitable access for everyone to a comprehensive array of resources.

Some benefits of clean energy are:
1. Decrease in gas emissions:
Usage of clean energy  helps reduce the frequency in the usage of fossil fuel-based  energies.

2. Increase in Human resources:
This could benefit the economy because of creation of new jobs via building of production plants, but you may want to ask, advocacy for clean energy could mean decline from usage of fossil fuel-based energy which in turn would mean loss of jobs for those in that sector. However, an answer is, advocacy for clean energy doesn't necessarily mean collapse of the fossil fuel-based production sector, diversion could be considered in that such raw materials for fuel based would be used in production of products that causes no harm to environment while withdrawing only the energy production from fossils.

3. Less Dependence on the other sources of energy:
Usage of clean energy will help reduce the frequency in the usage of fossil fuel based energies.

4. Lower health risks:
As a result of the reduction in the production of harmfull carbon dioxide emissions, it constitutes less health risks to humans, animals, and plants.

NIGERIAN LEGISLATION
Laws regulating environmental activities in Nigeria include the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency Act 2007( NESREA), The 1999 Nigeria Constitution, Environmental Impact Assessment  Act 1992 etc, and other state laws and regulations.

Section 20 of NESREA outlines the objective of the Nigerian State to enhance and safeguard Nigeria's air, land, water, forests, and wildlife.

Section 27 prohibits, without lawful authority, the discharge of hazardous substances into the environment. This section makes it an offence for anyone who violates this provision.

Section 20 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria outlines the state's responsibility to safeguard and enhance the environment, ensuring the protection of water, air, land, forests, and wildlife in Nigeria.

It was in line with this provisions and other related provisions of the law that the Lagos state of Nigeria government recently announced the ban of the non biodegradable Styrofoam in the state, and major reason was the menace the Styrofoam is causing the environment.

Summarily, it is apparent from the provisions of our laws that environmental safety is advocated for, and a major way to achieve this is a shift from fossil fuels usage to clean energy.
